The Beautiful Shanty Town
This started as a speed painting, but I liked the concept so much I decided to spend more time on it. My concept is that sometimes less is more. The kids in the shanty town are having a great time playing with the trash and making the best of what little they have. I made a point to put the city in the right side of the background to show the contrast of rich and poor, as an indication of what true happiness really means. If that makes any sense...Sunday, January 3, 2010
Duco: The Refugees
Duco: Filipino Huts during WWII
Duco (charcoal sequence)

This is a sequence I digitally painted for a story I am creating based on a true story about my grandparents, Juanita and Sebastian during WWII in the Philippines. This sequence is when Juanita is putting charcoal on her face to "uglify" herself and make her face appear darker. The Filipino women at the time had to protect themselves from possibly becoming "comfort women" or sex slaves for the Japanese soldiers. Having "light skin" was considered beautiful. My grandma was a beautiful light skinned woman.
